Why did I start Reading Justice?

Research from the NIH shows that 8-10% of America’s 73 million children have learning differences, and one of those children is my twin sister. As a result, I am intimately familiar with her challenges and hardships that come as a consequence of her learning differences. I am also aware that they make her no less brilliant or competent.

Fortunately, she has been able to access a great deal of assistance, but even so, this is not the case for many, which has wide-ranging and long-term negative consequences. As a result, I am committed to helping create a world in which learning differences are destigmatized and those with them are supported the way they should be.

For example, how do public school boards allocate funding to address students with learning differences? How might we better understand public funding formulas in order to address gaps in teacher quality or reading resources? How might we score legislators and other civic leaders based on their commitment to education? These and other questions are essential to ensuring reading justice.
