Charter School Opening in St. Tammany Parish

Louisiana Key Academy (LKA), a Baton-Rouge charter for students with dyslexia, is opening a second location in St. Tammany Parish. Typically, the school board decides on charter applications. This time, however, the school board Superintendent Frank Jabbia declared that a page of LKA’s application was incomplete and that the school should be forced to reapply the following year. In response, Laura Cassidy, chair of LKA’s board, told the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) that the incomplete page was due to technological errors. Nevertheless, Jabbia reiterated that there was no need for a charter in St. Tammany.

Thankfully, the school has been approved for the 2022-2023 school year following a BESE vote. It will be the first charter school in St. Tammany Parish and will use a curriculum designed for students with dyslexia, including at least 90 minutes of reading instruction a day. Also, students who intend on enrolling at the school will be tested for dyslexia free of charge.
